Cobalt is generally used along with lead / zirconium / strontium and calcium, otherwise the film may tend to give surface wrinkles, which would reduce the gloss and make the film dull.

Combinations containing zinc with cobalt show a marked tendency to “open” the film, will enable deeper oxygen penetration, and will consequently give rise to better depth hardening.

In Cobalt-lead-calcium combinations, the calcium acts as a Dispersing Agent and give more stable long term drying times.

In lead free paints, Cobalt-Zirconium mixtures of driers are used. When used in white paint, the deep blueviolet color counteracts the yellow color of the resin and thereby increases the whiteness of the paint.

Cobalt driers, being powerful oxidation catalyst, are used in only small doses as per following details

• Air-Drying:
  • Alkyd resin: 0.025 % - 0.05 %
  • Drying oils: 0.050 % - 1.00 %
  
  
• Stove Drying: 0.001 % - 0.005 %


• All drier additions are based on resin solids.

• Dispersion of cobalt in monostyrene or DOP act as activator for peroxides in the un- saturated polyester hardening process.
• Promote the adhesion of steel wires to rubber in radial tyres.
